WBGS Reality TV Debut on RiverPitch

We are excited to announce that the World’s Biggest Garage Sale CEO Yas Grigaliunas is one of the QLD contestants on an innovative new program, RiverPitch that launched Tuesday the 26th of February at 7:30pm on Your Money (Ch 95 on FTA or Ch 601 on Foxtel).

You can Catch Up on this week’s episode, to see Yasmin and the World’s Biggest Garage Sale make it through to the next round. There’s also a Recap of Episode 1  on Your Money.

In partnership with ACS and River City Labs, RiverPitch puts 24 Australian start-ups in the spotlight and on the fast track to growth, promoting and championing the Australian entrepreneur! Kylie Merritt, CEO of Your Money, said RiverPitch reflects both organisations’ commitment to supporting “Australian business and innovation”.

Hosted on Your Money, over the course of eight weeks, 24 contestants from around the country will compete to win a prize valued at $20,000 and to be named the overall winner.

During the eight weeks, each contestant works with an industry leader, mentoring them in perfecting their pitch, including:

Once the contestants have made it through the first round, they’ll face the judges:

Yas Grigaliunas commented, “When we held our very first World’s Biggest Garage Sale back in 2013, we dreamt of being on national television, so it’s incredible we are actually going to be one of the 8 Queensland startups on RiverPitch. And it’s a great group of startups! A big thanks to Your Money, ACS and River City Labs for this opportunity.”

You can tune in each week to see the judges evaluate each contestant’s pitch and determine the viability of each product’s potential to scale, the market fit, and the entrepreneur’s passion to succeed.

You can watch RiverPitch live from Tuesday the 26th of February at 7:30pm on Your Money Channel (Ch 95 on FTA or Ch 601 on Foxtel).

WBGS takes out two sustainability awards in one week

Spirits are flying high at the World’s Biggest Garage Sale with our team winning not only one, but two awards and our co-founder having been nominated for another! We are very honoured to announce that the World’s Biggest Garage Sale has won:

We’re also proud to announce that our founder, Yasmin Grigaliunas, has been named one of Queensland Urban Utilities Making a Difference finalists in the Women In Digital International 2018 awards, coming up this weekend.

The whole philosophy of the World’s Biggest Garage Sale is to activate sustainable consumption practices and promote the circular economy in our beloved River City, Brisbane, with the intention to take it global. It’s fantastic to be recognized for our work, that provides the community with a way to keep good quality unused or unwanted household goods circulating, rather than going to landfill.

At the end of the day we are all trying to make the best choices for our families, the community and the environment. There is a significant amount of embodied energy buried in the everyday goods we purchase every day. At a time when society’s issues with waste are becoming apparent, particularly in Australia, we need a better vehicle to ensure that precious embodied energy doesn’t go to waste.

One way to help limit our impact on the environment is to keep those goods and products circulating at their highest value for the longest possible time. And this is where WBGS comes in. We’re making it easy for the community to donate their unwanted goods and providing a focal event for people to purchase those donated goods. We have weekend donation points and pick-up trucks to come and collect your goods – just go to our Donate Stuff page. We then host an annual event, coming up on Sat 17 Nov, where you can come and purchase those goods (more to come on this in upcoming posts).

To sweeten it even more, we operate on a profit for purpose model, donations are made from the profit of the sale of donated goods to charity, helping the community prosper even further. These awards have highlighted to us that it’s possible to be successful and follow a non-standard business model, while making a positive contribution to the community.

Once again thank you to the Brisbane City Council and Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, Cleanaway and the Women in Digital Awards Gala. And of course, a huge thanks again to our community – you are the people who inspire us and keep us motivated to deliver greater impact for the wider Brisbane community every day.

Pinching ourselves….2018 Lord Mayor’s Business Awards finalists unveiled

There was a thrilling moment for our World’s Biggest Garage Sale team recently….that moment we received the news that we are finalists in the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards 2018.

“The Lord Mayor’s Businesses Awards are the benchmark for business excellence in Brisbane, showcasing our city as a great place to live, work and invest,” Cr Graham Quirk

I already feel like we are winners, fortunate to be seated alongside some of the most incredible organisations in YURIKA AWARD FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN BUSINESS.

The 5 finalists in this category:

There’s a sense of pride and honour to be considered equals with these leading and legendary organisations. The work they do is extensive, impacting and widely known.

We recently joined other finalists at the LMBA Finalist Cocktail Event presented by ANZ.

I was fortunate to bump into Cr Adam Allan too. We have been talking about locations to hold our next major Brisbane event. It’s amazing how the world collides us with what we need at the moment we need it.

Cr Adam Allan and Yas Grigaliunas

The WBGS team are now thinking about ‘what to wear’ at the LMBA this year. We’ll leave our trusty WBGS t-shirts in the drawer in exchange for something a little more glamorous.

When your passion (and business) is centred around the circular economy and sustainability in business, you can be assured that we won’t be buying anything new! With 60% of women having dormant items in their wardrobes, we have put the call out to friends, family and even strangers, to search for dresses and suits on theme with our WBGS brand. (reach out if you have something in your cupboard)

I’m predicting red, black and white will be the colours on the night!! ❤️

I want to acknowledge the judges for choosing the World’s Biggest Garage Sale as a finalist. We are still pinching ourselves……
