BRISBANE YOUTH WEEK 2021

Category
folder General

Last month Brisbane City Council held its annual Youth Week. A celebration and showcase of young people from 12-25 years of age. At WBGS 80% of our employees are under the age of 25, we are proud advocates of youth employment and upskilling, so naturally, we got involved!

Youth Week provides opportunities for young people to share ideas, attend live events, workshops, activities and forums, it celebrates the contribution of young people to the vibrant Brisbane community.

At WBGS we celebrated youth week by hosting two workshops (run by some of our own youth leaders) to teach young people sustainable skills in upcycling and repurposing.

Upholstering and Renewing Office chairs.

The first workshop was all about re-loving and renewing old furniture to make it like new again. Jet led this activity and took our youth team through an upholstery workshop, turning old office chairs into amazing new products (shown below). Demonstrating that you do not always have to chuck out old chairs, with a little bit of love and new fabric you can come up with creative and practical ways to make them new again.

Woodwork Tool Shop

Our second workshop was focused on tools, and led by Cooper, who prior to starting at the World’s Biggest Garage Sale had never touched a power tool before! This came in handy as Cooper was able to share his experiences from an absolute beginner to teach our youth attendees the basic skills on battery tools and how to use them. The workshop group practiced their skills by building pot plant stands out of recycled and repurposed pallet wood.

Thank you to everyone who attended, we had an incredible and inspiring day with some of Brisbane’s youth. We couldn’t be prouder of our youth team for running these workshops too! If you would like to express interest in our youth team running future workshops like these please let us know by contacting us!
